Great Dane official drawn representation

The Great Dane in his noble appearance combines a large, powerful well constructed body with pride, strength and elegance. By substance together with nobility, harmonious appearance, well proportioned outlines, as well as an especially expressive head, the Great Dane strikes the onlooker as a noble statue, never coarse or with refined elegance. Perfect in balance and always with clearly defined sexual dimorphism. He is the Apollo amongst all breeds.
SIZE AND WEIGHT: Height at the withers: Males: at least 80 cms, should not exceed 90 cms. Females: at least 72 cms, should not exceed 84 cms.

As per our experience a Great Dane male and female born with identical weight between 0,5 Kg and 0,9 Kg with big influence on the litter size and not as much on the adult size. When completed growth, around the 24 month, a Great Dane female have between 10% to 15% less size, in height and weight, compared to a Great Dane male. As an example our Multi Champion Dafne del Sardeu adult weight is 66 Kg and our Spanish Champion Great Dane male Cares Del Sardeu weight is 75Kg.
The Below data is based on precise and real facts collected from our Female Great Dane Dafne Del Sardeu. As per our hobby of dog shows we were very careful to keep her weight very well balanced over her growth that helped her to have an healthier growth and several Puppy and Junior dog show titles.
The pictures after the chart help on this perception comparing a Great Dane during the growth period and an a person with 1,8m (5’11”).

Great Dane with children

It’s a perfect dog for children, the Great Dane tend to be calmer and extra careful with children. Protective and tolerant, never aggressive, a real giant friend that will make beautiful memories that will last for live. Although great danes bound great with children, it should always be supervised the first contacts specially with young Great Danes and young kids, because of their size the energetic plays might end in a fall.

Great Dane apartment couch

My first Great Dane born 20 years ago, I was fortune to live with many Great Danes over the years. My job demanded to split my life between 2 cities, one city we live on a small farm and the other city we have an 100 square meters apartment.Great Dane in apartment In fact in the past 6 years me and 2 Great Danes spent more time in the apartment then the farm and I can confirm that Great Danes have absolutely no problem living in apartments, my male actually prefers the apartment since it means walks in the city that he prefers to the country ones. A Great Dane is not much of an territorial dog, their bound is with his family, as long as their with their family they are truly happy. Don’t expect a fully happy Great Dane locked outside the house, they wanna be glued to you where you stay, they will be happier with you in a apartment then alone outside the house. It it’s obviously the life in apartment demands your time to walk them, but if you don’t have time for your Great Dane you shouldn’t have one, neither a Great Dane or any other dog even if you have the biggest farm in the world. When adults, they are very calm in the house, just place a 1 square meter very confortable bed next to your favorite place in the house and your set for an happy Great Dane for life.

Great Dane Sport I’ve been said many times that a Great Dane is a soft and lazy dog, I disagree completely. A  Great Dane is an athletic, active dog!Great Dane jump A well balanced healthy Great Dane is completely suited for sports. They run powerfully, fast and strong, when you see a proper Great Dane running you wish you will never cross his way, it’s quite a spectacle! During his growth in the first 6 month of life they increase their weight 600 times (from 0,8kg to 50kg, check Growth question above) this fast growth makes them very fragile to hard physical work, it should be avoided sport in the first year of their life starting progressively after. When adult we were training with Dafne running, she handle it perfectly, she increased her strength, muscle and her body got even more solid, I got better as well 😋. As mentioned they are great to do sports with you but do not do extreme sports, very long runs, and very hard impacts most likely will reflect in a severe injury for their whole life. Avoid running on the beach and any non solid ground. Since their prone to gastric torsion they should never do any physical effort after eating.

Great Dane Water In general they do not, majority of Great Danes will avoid water at any cost. But this can be changed, avoid forcing them, most likely it will traumatize them. With allot of play on shallow water and respecting their own rhythm, their curiosity and love for you will overcome it.

How to train a Great Dane? They are not a predispose breed for obedience training, but there is absolutely no diference from any other dog either. Find a good trainer to teach you and start correctly from scratch. Great Danes are very sentimental, do the training often and in a happy and positive feedback with short sessions. It will be frustrating for both when reached their not understanding stubborn mood, stop but don’t give up on them, tomorrow is a new day. We train our Great Danes for dog shows ,we want her to hold still until further order. The example above is the start, the  below is the result,  you can have similar results for any other task you want them to do.

Great Dane food

Dividing the question,

    • What does a Great Dane eats?
Natural food or dog dry food, check with your veterinary or breeder what he suggest as Great Dane food, it is to much of a controversial matter that is not constructive to discuss.   Either way make sure it’s premium ingredients. Regarding their fast growth (check the Growth question) if feeded neglective during their growth this will result in atrophy and other bone injuries, then you will spend more in veterinaries then the proper food and the consequences are for life.
    • How much a Great Dane eats?
It’s unpredictable, as an example Dafne (female) eats 30% more then Cares (male) to have similar condition when normally is the oposite, it really depends on how active, metabolism etc.. dog dry food manufactures have on the back of the package charts of quantity per weight (check the Growth question for how much a Great Dane weights) that can give an approximate value. Start there then adjust per his condition.
    • How much costs to feed a Great Dane?
Its according to their size, use the same logic of the how much a Great Dane eats, and you can predict. The breeder of your dog most likely can help you how to save some money not compromising the quality.
    • How many times a day should a Great Dane eat?

Since their prone to gastric torsion split at least twice a day.

    • Should the plate be raised?
Another controversial question, although from experience it will not make them eat faster, how hunger is what makes them eat faster or slower, so yes place the plate higher, don’t make them crawl to eat.

Great Dane Hip dysplasia

Great Dane Elbow dysplasia

Great Danes have predisposición to some deceases, doesn’t mean they are a fragile breed, the way you take care daily actually dictate if you will have an healthy or a problematic Great Dane. Each breeder should always carefully select the parents, study the ancestors, progenitors litter siblings, and health tests. With all the precautions a breeder can reduce the probability of incidents but no one can ensure any decease will not occur.

Parents

The mother will be our Dafne and we already chosen the male that will be presented when litter is confirmed.

We do not breed with dogs that we don’t know in person, with this, although we have seen thousands of Great Danes in dog shows around Europe, we flight to meet our litter father and we can confirm that, just like Dafne, he is a superb healthy atretic Great Dane. Both parents are very successful in dog shows, DNA collected and obviously health tested with the best results. Both have perfect teeth, dark eyes with no surgery, strong fire color with no white marks and full complete black mask, these two never needed painting. Both temper is great and Dafne has this oficial per French Club “Test d’Aptitudes Naturelles”.
